Having worked on a number of photoshoots (because that’s the kind glamorous people we are), we’ve had the great pleasure of working with some shit-hot makeup artists in our time.

That said, we reckon even they’d be blown away by the masterful makeup artistry on display in Alexander Khokhlov’s photographic project, “Weird Beauty”.

It’s a simple but effective concept with amazing results: paint a model’s face white, then apply iconic images/shapes onto the blank facial canvas you have created. Shoot each image using black and white. The outcome? Pictures with genuine impact and a surreal, almost three dimensional quality to them.

Here’s what Alexander had to say about the project:

“The “Weird Beauty” project is made in collaboration with the amazing make-up artist Valeriya Kutsan. We decided to deny any color in our series except black and white,” says Khokhlov.

“This experience should prove that usual simple forms, familiar things or characters can be a main part of wonderful beauty looks. Model faces in this project are not just canvases for the art – they play their own role in each photo with different parts,” he added.

Though “Weird Beauty” is yet to reach completion, with a total of 15 photos set to be officially presented in Moscow in October, Alexander has kindly provided us with the nine images he has completed so far, all of which you can see below. Enjoy!
