We were going to start this article off by posing the following question: “What’s better than a McLaren MP4-12C?”. Then it dawned on us that that’s a ridiculous question, given that nothing is. But, in the event you were wondering what’s as good as the MP4-12C, then look no further than the convertible version of the best supercar to come out of Britain in years.
Gone is the MP4 in its moniker, with the remaining 12C accompanied by Spider – just in case you weren’t entirely sure of its roadster status.
Putting the name to one side – the key thing here is that the 12C Spider is a beast, and a sexy one at that. If there were any doubts that the MP4-12C would make for a decent convertible, those have been allayed with the arrival of this superior drop-top.
You want to know the speed stats, right? Well, though the 3.8-litre V8-powered 12C Spider is essentially the same as the MP4-12C, aside from the hardtop roof – its conversion into a dreamy roadster comes at the expense of a 3mph reduction in the top speed, now maxing out at 204mph. We can live with that.
Speed freaks will be pleased to learn that the 0-62mph figure remains at 3.1 seconds, while 0-100mph is just 0.1 seconds slower at 6.1 seconds. There are drop-tops that have had worse reductions in speed, we promise you.
Prices for the 12C Spider will start from £195,000, with first deliveries taking place in November.
